Vintage carved wood Mother Mary statue, Guatemalan folk art
This particular Mother Mary is from Guatemala, but ended up in Mexico where she stood on an alter in a church that was far removed from society. A very strange brand of Catholicism was practiced there, one that included sacrifices of chickens and doves, as well as some aspects of Santeria. Of course everything has a price - especially in Mexico - so Mary came home with a a friend of mine who stumbled upon the church in her travels.
There are spots where the wood and/or gesso and paint have chipped yet overall she is in good condition.
The statue measures about 11" tall by about 5" wide. It has a wooden base.
